    Edinburgh win another scrum penalty, but this time Jaco van der Walt pushes his kick wide of the right post.

    Montpellier withdraw veteran tight-head prop Jannie du Plessis, with Levan Chilachava on in his place. That may have something to do with the succession of penalties stemming from the visitors’ set-piece.

    Edinburgh flanker Hamish Watson is forced off, with Luke Crosbie on in his place.

    Not sure what that was for. Some suggestion of a dislocated finger, although the Scotland open-side did take a heavy thump to the ground in the tackle.

    Montpellier lose the ball in contact and Bill Mata picks it up. The number eight sets off on a rumble but popping out a one-handed offload with his right hand.

    It goes to ground but Edinburgh continue to attack and they’re up towards the Montpellier 22.

    That attack came to nothing but Edinburgh are still under pressure, with a scrum 5m from their own line.

    Cracking scrum from the Scottish side, who win a penalty as Montpellier are pinged for collapsing.

    Edinburgh clear their lines but it’s Montpellier back in possession, inside the hosts’ half.

    Suddenly there’s a skirmish between the two sets of players, which seems to have been sparked by an attempted high tackle by Bill Mata on Jacques Du Plessis.

    Referee JP Doyle settles for a penalty, and it’s the visitors kicking to touch and launching a line-out drive…

    Edinburgh 3-0 Montpellier

    Clever offload from Bill Mata in midfield, and centre Chris Dean, called up to the Scotland squad for the first time this week, continues the move with a weaving run.

    Unfortunately the support is not there quick enough, and Montpellier hooker Bismarck Du Plessis turns it over at the ruck. But a terrific counter-ruck from Jamie Ritchie brings Edinburgh a scrum.

    Stuart McInally finds Grant Gilchrist with his line-out throw, and Edinburgh are pressing closer and closer, inside the Montpellier 22.

    Eventually lock Jacques Du Plessis falls offside at a ruck, and Jaco van der Walt has a chance to land the first points of the game.

    The South African fly-half makes no mistake.

    Suddenly a kick doesn’t go to hand, and falls loose for Edinburgh wing Duhan van der Merwe, who gets a chance to stretch his legs down the left flank with a burst of speed.
