    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

I always think you can tell how frustrated and possibly bored a striker is getting by how deep he comes, and right then Boros’ Britt Assombalonga was right back by the centre-circle just to get a touch of the ball.

Teessiders having no problems getting to the edge of the Wednesday box, but when they get there, it’s like trying to get a pint at half-time – it’s the equivalent of a six-deep queue. Swamped.

  2. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Superb block by Michael Hector to deny Adam Clayton who zings one towards goal from the edge of the box after Britt Assombalonga teed him up.

Hector looked for a second like he might have snapped his Achilles, such was the force of it.

Looks like Lucas Joao is due a boot change, he’s gone for mouldies and they’re not offering sufficient grip. Schoolboy error.

“It’ll take a stud that pitch,” I can hear some of you saying.

  3. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Jordan Thorniley offers to show Britt Assombalonga some of his favourite slow dance moves as they chase a looping Ryan Shotton throw to the byline, and the Boro striker is left to complain he was being held by the Wednesday man.

    No decision coming. Still level.

  4. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Some ingenuity from Middlesbrough defender Dael Fry, who attempted to head the ball as it bobbled mere centimetres off the ground.

I really don’t think I can do it justice. He pushed himself along the turf and tried to nod it. Hilarious.

He was on the edge of the Wednesday box too.

    REACH KLAXON!

Adam Reach picks the ball up on the edge of the box, expectation rises… he is tackled by George Friend, but then robs him…

He arrows into the box, smashes toward goal on his right foot and it just sears over. Looked like the goalkeeper might have got a hand on that.

    Wednesday baring their teeth now.

Boro knocking on the door now, as Britt Assombalonga was allowed to turn in midfield and drive towards the box, but his shot skittered behind for a corner.

From the set-piece Boro come again, Daniel Ayala crosses into the back post but there’s no-one home.

  7. CLOSE!

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

George Friend bent a beautiful free-kick into the middle of the box, it was Stuart Pearce-esque, and Daniel Ayala’s header went wide.

Boro kept up the pressure, but the second bite of the cherry resulted in a foul on the goalkeeper Cameron Dawson and Wednesday survive.

  8. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Sheffield Wednesday getting closer. Ball forward was flicked on by Steven Fletcher into the path of Adam Reach who then slid it wide right to Lucas Joao.

The in-form forward jinked across the edge of the box before teeing up Fletcher, whose shot was blocked.

At the other end, Boro win a free-kick midway inside the Owls half…

  9. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Barry Bannan flatters to deceive, a curling effort sails wide and over the top. Wrong on all levels.

Boro breathe a sigh of relief.

  10. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

First 20 gone then and you have to say that Wednesday haven’t got their three-man forward line into the game yet.

That said, Mo Besic has just hauled down Lucas Joao with all the subtlety of using a steamhammer to crack a nut and Wednesday have a free-kick about 25 yards out.

Joey Pelupessy and Barry Bannan are around it…

  11. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough are getting some joy in working Wednesday down this right-hand side and Stewart Downing has been dangerous when coming inside onto his left foot.

One such raid produced a corner, but the reset Owls defence coped with the danger to clear.

Right now, you’ve got a real difference in character on the benches – Tony Pulis is up and barking like a guard dog, while Jos Luhukay is happy to stand there, possibly stroking his tache and pondering how he might stem the Boro flow.

  12. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Sloppy play in defence by Tom Lees, bending a ridiculously over-ambitious pass to a team-mate which is picked off by Ryan Shotton, but weight of numbers ensures the opportunity comes to nothing for Middlesbrough.

Throw-in to come now though… danger! Hacked away by the Wednesday defence.

  13. CLOSE!

    Adam Reach header

Barry Bannan stands up a peach of a cross to the back-post and Adam Reach just glances his header over the top.

Really smart play from the Scotland schemer, popping it perfectly.

    Boro get away with it.

  14. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Boro worked their way into the box but despite being well placed, Britt Assombalonga just couldn’t turn on the ball and get a shot away and eventually Wednesday smuggled the ball clear.

The Teessiders are soon back on the attack, sharp one-touch passing frees Mo Besic on the right but he is denied and the home side mop up.

It’s been a snappy start but nothing concrete to mention chances-wise.

Adam Reach got the ball about 30 yards out, and there was a collective roar of “SHOOT”.

He didn’t, he was tackled. Boro shutting down Wednesday swiftly whenever they get into range.

The stat tells you why, no team has scored more goals from outside the 18-yard box than the Owls…

  16. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Wednesday trying to play football in their own half and under pressure. They get away with it after some impressive close-quarters one-touch stuff.

They’re looking to get their forwards into the game, with Barry Bannan scheming like a quarterback. No avail yet though.

One thing I bemoan about Sheffield Wednesday is the loss of their old 1970s pop art crest. It was terrific. This traditional shield type thing doesn’t do it for me.

  17. Post update

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

Got to say, that Middlesbrough kit is a work of art. Shades of 1986.

Meanwhile, Wednesday dither at the back, Matt Penney is robbed of the ball and Jonny Howson skids a ball across the box but it goes away to the back stick to no danger.

Bright and lively pressing start by the Teessiders.

    Wednesday need to get going.

  18. KICK-OFF

    Sheff Wed 0-0 Middlesbrough

After we dispense with the Jeff Beck backing track, we are under way at Hillsborough.

Peter Bankes draws on his whistle, and Sheffield Wednesday get us going…

  19. Post update

Sheff Wed v Middlesbrough (19:45 BST)

Warm hugs and handshakes between Jos Luhukay and Tony Pulis. Might not be so cordial later!

    We’re almost ready to go…
